Yoga for Better Sleep: Restorative Rituals for Deep Rest

If you’ve ever struggled to fall asleep or stay asleep, you’re not alone. In our fast-paced world, rest can feel elusive—but yoga offers a gentle, effective way to support your body and mind in winding down. Through intentional movement, meditation, and relaxation, yoga can help you create a nightly ritual that promotes mental and physical wellbeing and deeper, more restorative sleep.

At Twist of Fate Yoga and Tarot, I guide students through practices designed to calm the nervous system, release tension, and prepare the body for rest. Whether you prefer a slow restorative flow or a gentle vinyasa sequence, yoga can be a powerful tool for improving sleep quality.

Why Yoga Helps You Sleep

Yoga works on multiple levels to support sleep:

  • Regulates the nervous system through breath and movement

  • Reduces stress and anxiety by calming the mind

  • Releases physical tension in the muscles and joints

  • Encourages introspection and emotional balance

Regular practice helps train the body to shift from “doing” to “being,” making it easier to transition into sleep.

Restorative Poses for Sleep

These poses are perfect for winding down before bed. Hold each for 3–5 minutes with slow, steady breathing:

  • Legs-Up-the-Wall (Viparita Karani) – Calms the nervous system and reduces fatigue

  • Supported Child’s Pose (Balasana) – Gently stretches the back and hips while grounding the body

  • Reclined Bound Angle Pose (Supta Baddha Konasana) – Opens the chest and hips, promotes relaxation

  • Savasana with a bolster or blanket – Deep rest and integration

Add meditation or breathwork (like 4-7-8 breathing) to deepen the relaxation.

Gentle Vinyasa Flow for Evening Energy Release

If your body needs movement before settling down, try this short sequence:

  1. Cat-Cow (Marjaryasana/Bitilasana) – Loosens the spine and connects breath to movement

  2. Low Lunge (Anjaneyasana) – Opens the hips and releases tension

  3. Seated Forward Fold (Paschimottanasana) – Encourages introspection and calm

  4. Supine Twist – Detoxifies and soothes the spine

  5. Savasana – Always end with stillness

This flow helps release the day’s energy and prepares the body for rest.

Create a Sleep Ritual

  • Practice yoga in dim lighting or by candlelight

  • Use calming scents like lavender or sandalwood

  • Journal or pull a tarot card for introspection before bed

  • End with a short meditation or gratitude practice
