Wrist Health and Safety in Yoga

Wrist discomfort is one of the most common challenges people experience in yoga, especially in practices that include weight-bearing poses like plank, downward dog, and chaturanga.

The wrists are relatively small joints that are not typically used to supporting the full weight of the body. When yoga suddenly asks them to do so, it can create strain if strength, alignment, and preparation are not in place.

One of the most important factors is alignment. Placing your wrists directly under your shoulders and evenly distributing weight across your hands helps reduce unnecessary strain. Spreading your fingers and pressing through the knuckles can also create more stability. [betteryoga.org]

Strength plays a role as well. Supporting muscles in the arms, shoulders, and core help take pressure off the wrists, making poses feel more balanced.

Warming up is often overlooked but essential. Gentle wrist circles, light stretching, and gradually increasing weight-bearing prepares the joint for practice. Jumping straight into intense poses can lead to discomfort or injury.

It is also important to modify when needed. Lowering to forearms, using props, or adjusting angles can make a big difference. There is no benefit to pushing through wrist pain.

At Twist of Fate Yoga and Tarot, I emphasize listening to your body above everything else. If something feels off, it is always okay to adjust or rest.

Yoga should build strength and awareness over time, not create strain.

With proper attention and care, wrist strength and comfort can improve significantly. Like anything in yoga, it is less about forcing and more about building gradually, with patience and awareness.
